Hugh was a gunsmith, and there are in the families of his descendants, some of the old long rifles for which he was locally famous. Heentered title for land on which he had squatted in 1820. In 1821, onthis land, one and one half miles south of Leesville, he built a largetwo story house of massive hewn logs, having at each end a greatchimney and at the back a large room forming an "L" wilh the mainbuilding and connected wth it by an open shed. This house, stands neara spring of constantly flowing water and is now in the possession of agranddaughter, Miss Eliza Katherine

"A white fringed hunting coat, awhite shirt and white pin-striped trousers, made sailor fashion, proclaim Hugh to have been somewhat of a 'dandy.' The coat andtrousers are adorned with exquisitely wrought silver buttons made
by Hugh and which attest his skill as a worker in metals. All thesegarments are made of homespun, and were fashioned by his womenfolkwith tiny, beautiful stiches. A brown silk umbrella with deep fringe,a red silk handkerchief of lovely design, and a many colored woolshawl have been handed down from Nancy's early wedded days."

59 * This has not been documented. *French/English descent. She did speak fluent German. This information was remember from conversations between my sister Lois L. Guthrie and my beloved mother, Iva Lee.

I suspect that my grandmother's real given name was Jerusha. This was a rather common name that was used in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is of biblical roots. It means "possessed by a husband." Jerusha in the bible was the wife of Uzziah, King of Judah, and mother of king Jotham (2 Kings 15:33).

I also suspect that the Name , "Lee" , is of prime importance. This because two of her daughters had that as a middle name, Iva Lee and Emma Lee. This is just an educated guess, It was the normal practice for the maiden name to show up with at least one or more female children, just as the practice of giving a male child one of the given names of his father or that of his paternal grandfather. This naming custom was common because it was thought that if the child was female it was because of the strong lineage of the wife and if it was male, it was because of the strong lineage of the husband.

However having made that statement, it must be remembered that at this time it is merely supposition, nothing more. I will follow through with this supposition to see if it holds true, having hit a brick wall utilizing straight forward tracing. I hope to one day view the gravestone of Rusha Farmer, if there is one. 5/20/2000

61 1754-1755 Charles was listed as a Regt. Soldier under Thomas Lovick.

August 1761 Charles Guthrie among those appointed to lay off a road from Beaufort to Joseph Morses on North River.

1765 Charles Guthrie appointed constable from North River to Core Sound.
March 1769 Joshua Morse appointed constable in room of CHARLES GUTHRIE
(Here is where it gets interesting, a lot of things happened with Charles in 1769).
March of 1769, James Hutchingson delivered into the court Charles Gutry and the court ordered him into custody. Joshua Morse was then appointed constable in his place. By the June term of court Charles was dead, because his wife Lucy was ordered to bring her son, orphan boy Fredrick to the next court.
This makes me wonder if Charles was hanged or maybe killed trying to escape. Will need to get copies of the trial docket to find the answer.

[http://www.ci.scottsbluff.ne.us/comunity.htm:
Before the ditch construction began to taper off, the Great Western Sugar Company completed the erection of a beet sugar factory in Scottsbluff in 1910. The development of irrigation plus the proximity of the sugar factory soon made the raising of sugar beets a great agricultural industry in Scotts Bluff County and surrounding areas. For miles around, farmers hauled sugar beets to the Scottsbluff factory.

With the aid of the canal-building crews and the sugar factory, Scottsbluff was rapidly becoming the principal trading center of the valley. As people in surrounding farms and villages acquired automobiles, they started coming to Scottsbluff to trade.]

85 Abraham Guthrie married Mary Ann Sherouse in Georgia, in Ebenezer, Effingham County Abt. 1841. They had their first two children, Sarah and Salena, while living in Georgia. They removed to what was then a part of Alachua County, Florida in Abt. 1845. This area was eventually to end up as part of Clay County, Florida. Here they took up residence in the Middleburg - Green Cove Springs area and raised their family.

Abraham's father, Samuel, his mother, Nancy and all his siblings removed to Florida also.

**Mary Ann's brother, Clatus Sherouse with his wife, Mary Grantham made the move also, as did Mary Grantham's sister, Sarah Grantham, who moved with her to what was then Alachua. Clatus Sherouse, wife Mary and her sister, Sarah lived together after the move.

**supposition. If Clatus Sherouse being born in South Carolina across the border from Ebenezer, Georgia. This would explain the present in the same location in Florida.

86 Abron Guthrie now spelled Abraham met Iva Lee Farmer and they were married in June 1919. Abraham was a grocer/butcher by trade. He was a store manager of a Piggly-Wiggly store in Palatka, Florida for several years. He also managed one of the chain stores in Valdosta, Georgia for a short period of time.

Later he owned his owned his own grocery stores on two separate occasions during the 1930s. He separated from his wife in 1939 and moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Leaving Iva Lee with 5 children in Palatka.

During the World War II years he worked as a welder in the Jacksonville shipyards for a while.

He and Iva Lee were divorced in circa 1942. He then married and had three children by his second wife, given name Rita. John, Alvin, and Brenda Guthrie. Abraham died in 1965 and was buried in the family plot in The Greater Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery near Green Cove Springs, Florida.

NOTE!!!!
The death records index show Abron as Abraham being born in 1901 and dying in 1963. It also gives his social security number as 262-18-3963. The social security no. is correct and the dates were entered incorrectly into the records.

87 According to family legend William M.? Guthrie killed a man by the name of Yagey, who was having an affair with Rebecca Barker Guthrie, and fled to Oklahoma. No other information was ever spoken of other than the fact that it happened in Bradyville, Iowa. No court record or newspaper record has been found in Page County, Iowa or Nodaway County, Missouri. The family has never known anything of this William.

In searching the Baldwin ancestors I located a Joe Loyd James Baldwin living in Bakersfield, California who was researching his Great-Grandfather William M. Baldwin. William M. Baldwin's family tradition states that he ran away from home at the age of 13 (Abt. 1853-54). Joe Baldwin's family believes that Baldwin is not the original family name and William M. Baldwin chose never to be listed on the Oklahoma Tax List or Census. Joe and I have made the following notes:

William M? Guthrie b. Abt. 1840 Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois.
William M. Baldwin b. 18 October 1840 location unknown.

William M? Guthrie moved when he was 13 with parents & siblings to Wayne County, Iowa 1853-54.
William M. Baldwinwould have been 13 years old 18 October 1853.

William M? Guthrie ran away to Oklahoma.
William M. Baldwin ran away from Iowa at age 13.

William M? Guthrie married Rebecca M. Barker, 29 August 1872 in Nodaway County, Missouri.
William M. & Sarah Collens Baldwin had their first child Lula Baldwin b. 8 April 1888 in Oklahoma.

Did William M ?. Guthrie run away from the Guthrie Homestead in Nodaway County, Missouri (farm land borders Bradyville, Page County, Iowa and their post office would also have been Bradyville, Iowa). No county court or local newspaper record has been found concerning the killing in Page County, Iowa or Nodaway County, Missouri. The Clarinda, Page County, Iowa Court House records need yet to be checked. His father Michael Guthrie listed in his will of April 1884, William Guthrie as an heir/ William M. Baldwin had a child with Sarah Collens Baldwin in April 1888, so William M.? Guthrie must have departed for Oklahoma sometime in those four years.

Joe Baldwin has given us the following information:

1 March 1999 Email = William M. Baldwin ran away from home at the age of 13. My father told me that someone in Oklahoma said that they think he changed his name to Baldwin. I have a picture of his head stone at Sulphur Cemetery in Hartshorne, Oklahoma which shows that he was born October 18, 1840 and died December 26, 1909 and was the husband of Sarah Baldwin. I do not know what his middle name was. I could not find him listed on the census records of any year, which makes me think he did not want to be found. This would go along with what you say. I found his wife and my grandfather on the census after he died. It listed her husband as being born in Iowa. His wife Sarah C. Collens was born 15 February 1860 in Missouri. I hope this helps both of us. It sounds like the same person as you wrote me about. Please let me know what kind of trouble he was in and what was his real last name.

2 March 1999 Email = I will give you all the information that I have on William M. Baldwin with his wife and children as follows:
William M. Baldwin b. 18 October 1840 Iowa? d. 26 December 1909 in Sulfer, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. Married Sarah C. Collens b. 15 February 1860 Missouri? d. 21 July 1928 in Halleyville, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. Sarah was buried in Blanco, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma near her parents graves. Sarah was much younger than her husband William. Before meeting William she had a job of health care giver to a married woman. While working in that home involved with the woman's husband and soon found she was pregnant and eventually had two children (Annie and Edward Lee). She left this living arrangement and married William. The two children became the children of William and took his last name.
Children of William M. & Sarah C. Collens Baldwin are:
1. Annie Baldwin b.21 February 1877 Missouri, m. Jesse Wilcox 3 August 1894 in Oklahoma, d.19 June 1958.
2. Edward Lee Baldwin b. 23 May 1880 in Oklahoma, m. Bessie (Dora) May Willcox, d. 5 February 1960 (buried in Blanco, Pittsburg, Oklahoma).
3. Lula Baldwin b. 8 April 1888 Oklahoma, m. Thomas (Jack) V. Ivey, d. 15 October 1982 (buried in Blanco, Pittsburg, Oklahoma).
4. Irene Baldwin b. in Oklahoma, m. ? Davis
5. Maude Baldwin
6. W. L.(Dock) Baldwin b. Oklahoma, m. Ossie Baldwin, d. 11 October 1918 in the Army three days before her. She did not know he had died. Both died of the flu.
7. Ethel Baldwin b. Oklahoma
8. Frank James Baldwin b. 25 September 1899 Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, m. Edith Marran Moore 11 July 1920, d. 1 April 1954 Bakersfield, Kern County, California. Note: This is my Grandfather. His wife died 5 January 1935. They had 4 children of which #3 was my father. Their first child died at 5 years of age. Their fourth child died at the age of 9 years. My father died 19 July 1958.

I hope this can help you. I know that some of the information does not match but you know it could be wrong. My father said he asked about his Grandfather but they told him just to let old dogs lie.

December 1999 - Unfortunately, Joe Loyd James Baldwin has disappeared from the Internet before we could complete our research. Joe did not list his father's or mother's names nor the details of their children.
