reversed.
Vernice Fay PETERSON
154 Birth Date may be Jan. 1, 1788 - not Jan. 6. Need to verify. Catherine BUCHANAN
155 Birth Date may have been August 27, 1811. Martha Hill GUTHRIE
156 Birth date might be May 21, 1871 Joseph I. GUTHRIE
157 BIRTH: 1850 Census Ashland County, Green Township, Ohio #296 shows Richard as
age 73, farmer, born in New York (Note: If 1780 is Richard's correct birth date, he would have only been 70 at time of this census). See AT THE FORD OF THE BIRCHES for story of flight from Hebron during Burgoyne's march south to Albany and New York in 1777. The inhabitants of Hebron fled their homes while their town was occupied by the British. This could be the flight that ties in with the oral history of George escaping during the Rev. War with his family at which time Richard was born (and supposedly a twin brother of whom there is no further reference). If George was born in 1777, the 1850 census would be his correct age.
1880 Ashland County, Green Township, Ohio Census shows Simon's father (Richard) as born in PA. The tombstone inscription gives the age as 71 in 1851.
Richard and Mary are buried in Section 2, Lot 508 next to son and daughter-in-law, George and Ellen Guthrie.

There is conflicting information both in the oral tradition and in census records about Richard's birth place ranging from New York to New Jersey to Pennsylvania.

By 1807 William, Richard and John had settled in Columbiana County, OH, and Samuel was there by 1812 if not earlier. Richard and William were in Captain William McLaughlin's Company of the First Regiment of the Second Brigade, Fourth Division, Ohio which was organized in Columbiana County, Ohio on May 8, 1806."

In 1814 all four of the brothers were in Green Township (Richland County - now Ashland County.) From HISTORY OF ASHLAND COUNTY, "Richard Guthrie, born in Pennsylvania, came to Ashland County in 1814 and settled on the farm now owned by Benjamin Castor and Jacob Robinson. He bought his farm off the school lands. He was a distiller by trade, and built a distillery on his farm, which he ran for about forty years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and in politics was a Democrat. He married Mary VanScoyoc of Pennsylvania (sic), and was the father of thirteen children.

The following written by Bea Guthrie Fortney (daughter of Arthur Guthrie),
Galion, Ohio:

"Richard Guthrie selected as his farm acres west of the Blackfork. The soil was
quite fertile and corn grew well. But in those early times before
transportation of any kind gave an outlet for produce, home distilleries
provided the only place where grain would bring a cash return. Richard Guthrie
ran a still located near the spring. It is said that even by the poet,
James Whitcomb Riley, that:

"after topping old Guthrie's hill
One could see
"Old Guthrie's still-house, where
Miners has got licher there
That's pervidin' we could show 'em
Old folks sent for it from home."

He (Richard Guthrie) tried to exercise the greatest care in selecting his
patrons, not wishing to sell to habitual drunkards or to boys. By 1929
both highway and railroad pass through this farm, and backwater from the
Blackfork has turned some acreage into swamp. Ten acres of the original
Richard Guthrie homestead have become a part of the farm owned and operated by
the late Arthur Nelson Guthrie, thus remaining in the family name for a century
and more.

"Richard and Mary Van Scoyce Guthrie were the parents of seventeen children.
The two eldest, John and Margaret, were born in Pennsylvania (sic), all the others
were born on the Ohio homestead described above. The writer knew only three:
Sarah, Lewis (her grandfather) and Simon. John served in the Civil War. Some
of this family lived to be octogenarians and more."

Note by Jean: It is unclear to me which John Guthrie served in the Civil War. Richard's brother, John, died in 1839. John's son also would have been too old for Civil War service. Richard's son, born in 1812, would have been close to 50 at the time of the war. John b. 1825 of William of John would have been the right age as would John b. abt 1829 of John of John.

The above oral history is probably incorrect concerning the two eldest children born in Pennsylvania. Richard and Mary were married in Columbiana County, Ohio in 1812, and Richard served in the militia out of Columbiana Co., OH so it is not likely that they moved back to Pennsylvania for the birth of these two children; however since Columbiana Co. borders Pennsylvania, it is not impossible.
Richard GUTHRIE
158 BIRTH: 1850 Census Ashland County, Green Township, Ohio #296 shows Simon as age 14: R. A. Cunning shows Simon's birth year as 1835. Melwood Van Scoyce shows 1836 in his book DESCENDANTS OF CORNELIS AERTSEN VAN SCHAICK. 1880 Ashland County, Green Twp., Ohio, shows Simon as age 45. This would appear to be in error. Death certificate gives birth as Nov 14, 1835.

BIO: From family history notes of Bea Guthrie Fortney:

Simon Guthrie was born on the old Guthrie Homestead in Green township, Ashland County, Ohio on Nov. 14, 1835. The writer recalls vividly the story from the lips of her neighbor "Grandma Ernsberger," how she was told that the same
doctor officiated at the birth of the two children of neighbors born on the
same day: Esther Irvin (Ernsberger) born to James Irvin and wife and Simon
Guthrie to Richard and Mary Guthrie. He (Simon) married Sarah Hazen, a profane and hot tempered woman. They may have had one or two sons who died in childhood; one daughter lived to maturity. For many years during the childhood of the writer, Simon and his wife lived on a very small plot of ground which was quite near the spring of Richard Guthrie's home and was part of the
original homestead. The house stood at the top of the hill where the country
road crossed the railroad. He was quite lame, due to an attack of "white
swelling." They eked out a bare existence from proceeds from two cows which he pastured along the highway and help from his several nephews (sons of Lewis Guthrie.). When infirmities made it impossible for them to stay in their own home, they were taken to the Ashland County home. After a time their daughter came to Ohio and took them back with her to South Dakota where they both died.

In 1819, Samuel and judith Guthrie; Elija Carter, brother of Judith;and Ann (Carter) Gibson, widowed sister of Judith and Elijah; migratedto what is now Washington County, Arkansas. It is said that Samuel hadlived on Copper Creek is Scott County, and that he went to the OsageIndian Nation and lived among the Indians.

Samuel Guthrie was living in Hempstead County, Arkansas, in 1828 whenhe was allowed 258 acres of land as a claim against the Osage Indians.(Terr. Papers of the U.S., Arkansas Terr., 1825-1829, volume 20).

The Court order books of Scott County, Virginia, revealed that SamuelGuthrie was dead by 1847.

HISTORY OF NODAWAY COUNTY MISSOURI BIOGRAPHICAL c. 1900

PERRY GUTHRIE

One of the leading agriculturists of Lincoln township, Nodaway county, Missouri, is Perry Guthrie, whose farm is pleasantly located two and one-half miles southwest of Braddyville, Iowa. He was born on that place, March 16, 1860, and is a son of Michael and Elizabeth (Osborne) Guthrie. The father was born in Pike county, Ohio, March 5, 1811, and in 1827 removed to Vermillion county, Indiana, where he resided for eighteen months. He then located in Vermilion county, Illinois, at Danville, and, after making his home there until 1854, he went to Wayne county, Iowa, but the following year removed to a farm in Nodaway county, Missouri. When in Illinois he learned the cooper's trade, which he followed for ten years, but much of his life has been devoted to farming. During the Black Hawk war he served for about two months, aiding in suppressing the uprising of the Indians, who menaced the life and property of the frontier settlers. He was married in Illinois, on the 3rd of November, 1836, to Miss Elizabeth Osborne, who was born in Adams county, Ohio, October 20, 1819. When a maiden of ten summers she accompanied her parents on their removal to Kentucky, and after a year they became residents of Vermillion county, Indiana, whence they went to Illinois. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie were born twelve children. The father died August 21, 1890, at the age of seventy-nine years, and his wife passed away October 22, 1892, at the age of seventy-three years.

Perry Guthrie was reared on the home farm, and after attending the schools for some years he spent one term in college. He was married in Nodaway county, Missouri, August 13, 1882, to Miss Ocea Willey. Her parents, Calvin and Christiana (Blake) Willey, were natives of New Hampshire, and from that state moved to Wisconsin but about twenty-eight years ago came to Missouri, making their home ever since on a farm in Nodaway county. Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie have six children, four sons and two daughters, namely: C. Carlisle, A. Garland, M. Mable, C. Edith, Lee Caroll and Vernon Cecil. After his marriage Mr. Guthrie settled on the old home place, where he has since resided with the exception of four years spent on another farm one mile west. At the death of his father he purchased the place. At first the father bought only a small tract, but kept adding to it, mostly wild land, until he had a good-sized farm. Mr. Guthrie usually supports the Democratic party and cast his first presidential vote for Grover Cleveland in 1884. He and his family attend the Seventh Day Adventist church, at Clearmont, and are held in high regard by their neighbors and many friends.
