GUTHERIE
D.E.D. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1881 P.2
LETTER FROM SMITH D. JONES Winfield, Kansas
In answer to article in D.E.D. of Sept. 30 regarding tombstone on LONG farm with name of ELI GUTHERIE. "I personally was aquainted with him and know that he died and was buried on the farm then owned by himself and a younger brother, CORBLEY GUTHERIE. Farm was first owned by their father, also buried on the farm, ARCHIBALD GUTHERIE. He selected burying ground on West part of the farm, planting 4 apple trees in a square. Farm has changed hands several times and only one apple tree left to mark the burying place. Ground has been cultivated over for several years. Eli has only one remaining sister living, now at Taylorsville. If alive, she is quite an aged widow, name of MARY GROVES. THOMAS S. JONES was his brother-in-law and also lives in Taylorsville. I was raised in Nineveh township about three miles north of said farm. In 1851, I moved to Dewitt County, Illinois and in 1878, came to Kansas. Am 64 years of age - live in Cowley County, Kansas near Southern border of the State, 9 miles southwest of Winfield in Beaver township. Other Bartholomew County people here are R.S. Tannehill, J. D. Hammond, C. C. Anderson, John Miller and Irwin Greaves.

D.E.D. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1881 P.1
James Lawless says he knew ELI GUTHRIE p.1 of Union Township and his father - says a small stream there is GUTHRIE.

D.E.D WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1881
GUTHRIE, ELI
On last Sunday, out on Isaac Long's place, (p.1) in Union Township, a tombstone was found bearing the following inscription: "ELI GUTHRIE WAS BORN JUNE THE 18TH 1807. AGE 31, DECESD MAY 18TH 1838 AND LEFT A DEAR WIFE AND TWO SISTERS TO LAMENT AFTER THE DECESD." The stone was nearly covered in the earth. It is remarkable on account of the name not being known to any one now residing in that locality.

115 As a young boy Jesse and his brother Hop planted their jack knives hoping a knife tre would grow. Also with Hop they burned down their Uncle Mortorn and Aunt Net's ice house. They used the straw, that was covering the ice, to start a fire to warm their hands. Jesse helped his father build the log cabin that they lived in. They used a jar of water for a level.
When they were married and the weather warmed up they lived in the corn crib.
Would hunt rabbits, opossums, etc. and sell them in town to get money for groceries. He held several jobs, he worked at a hydro plant in Detroit, Michigan. He came back from Michigan in 1926 at Christmas. It was then that he met Isabel and decided not to go back to Michigan. They were introduced by Thelma Pruett who was a friend of Isabel and a cousin to Jesse.
He then grew tobacco until 1931. In 1931 they moved to Canada, returning to Virginia in September of 1932. Isabel was expecting Aubrey and did not want to have a Canadian child.
In Virginia they grew vegetables and tobacco until 1938. In 1938 Jesse came to Canada to cure tobacco and brought the whole family. In 1939 the family moved to Canada to stay.
In 1940 Jesse worked on the railroad, putting in ties. Moved two miles north of Forestville, Ont. in 1941. In the winter he worked for Brantford Coach and Body, building truck racks. In the spring of 1942 the family moved across the road, and Jesse worked in Brantford for Brantford Cortage. (made twine) In 1943 the family moved again, to a house 1/2 mile east of Forestville. In 1944 they moved to a house between Lasalette, Teeterville and Windham Centre, near McKnight school. The school was located on the northeast corner and the house was on the southwest corner. In 1946 they moved to Howard Crane's farm southeast of Bloomsburg, only staying for 2-3 months. Then moved just east of Waterford on Duncomb Rd. off Thompson Rd. (formerly Yankee St.). In August of 1946 they moved again, this time to Fertilizer Rd. east of Delhi. In 1947 they moved to Tom Freeman's farm in Bloomsburg were they stayed until 1953. Then they moved to the 9th concession of Windham township. In 1953 Jesse cured tobacco for John Stahl. Bought a farm and converted it to a tobacco farm around 1956. Grew tobacco on this farm until 1965. He sold the farm in the spring of 1966 and moved in October to Bloomsburg. The house in Bloomsburg was their first house to have an indoor toilet. The property with the house was purchased for $8000 and the north half of the lot was sold in 1984 for $10000.
Jesse died at home sitting in his favorite chair.
